Bio-Swales are often integrated into the landscape design to reduce runoff, increase filtration and remove pollutants. Bio-Swales are considered cost-effective tools for removing sediment and other particulate pollutants from storm-water runoff. As the water infiltrates, soil microbes breakdown pollution, and plants take up some of the water and use available nutrients for growth. The rest of the water moves down the soil to recharge the ground table.
Well-designed and maintained Bio-Swales can be very attractive and add aesthetic appeal to a residential or commercial site with texture, colour and utility.
